Mumbai and surrounding regions are grappling with intense monsoon rains, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a Red Alert for Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra. The Financial Capital itself is under a Yellow Alert, with neighbouring districts such as Thane, Palghar, Kolhapur, Satara, Raigad and Ratnagiri on Orange Alert.
The city has been experiencing its second wettest July on record, with water levels in the seven lakes supplying Mumbai rising to 58% of capacity.
Andheri Subway shut, schools in Raigad and Thane closed
The Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, forecasts heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in the districts of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra. Additionally, North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to see heavy rains at isolated spots, with Vidarbha expecting thundershowers and gusty winds.
The deluge has caused significant disruptions, with the Andheri Subway closed due to waterlogging. Schools and colleges in Raigad and Thane districts have been shut as a precautionary measure.
Record rainfall overflows Tansa and Vihar lakes
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that two of Mumbai’s crucial water sources, the Tansa and Vihar lakes have started overflowing. Tansa Lake began overflowing at 4:16 PM, with three dam gates opened to release water at 3,315 cusecs. Earlier, Vihar Lake overflowed around 3:50 AM. Additionally, the city’s water stock has risen to 58% of total capacity, bringing relief after June’s below-average rainfall.
The weather department predicts gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph and temperatures ranging between 24°C and 29°C for today. As the monsoon season continues to unleash its fury, residents are urged to remain cautious and stay updated with the latest weather advisories.
