Mumbai is gearing up to unveil its first elevated forest walkway, an innovative project designed to blend urban life with nature. The 705-meter-long walkway, inspired by Singapore’s famous forest trails, will connect Kamala Nehru Park to Doongerwadi Woods at Malabar Hill while offering uninterrupted Arabian Sea views.
Stunning views and eco-friendly design await
The wheelchair-friendly walkway deck is constructed using wood, with the structure thoughtfully designed to minimise the use of concrete. This eco-friendly approach ensures that the natural water flow along the hill slopes and the movement of wildlife remain undisturbed, preserving the area’s ecological balance.
Stretching 705 meters into the lush Malabar Hill forest, the trail offers entry and exit points at Siri Road, just behind Kamala Nehru Park, and provides breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea and Girgaon Chowpatty. Highlights of the walkway include a dedicated birdwatching area and a glass-bottom viewing deck for visitors to enjoy.
Built at an estimated cost of ₹25 crore, the project’s civil work is now 90% complete. Finishing touches such as electrification, painting, and the construction of restrooms and ticket counters are currently underway.
Originally tendered in 2021 for ₹22 crore, with civil work starting in 2022, the project cost rose to ₹25 crore after including GST. Due to Malabar Hill’s designation as a ‘silent zone’, construction was restricted to specific hours, extending the timeline to over two years.
Set to open around New Year, this walkway promises to be a tranquil retreat, redefining urban green spaces and highlighting Mumbai’s commitment to sustainable development.
