Mumbai’s new Jogeshwari Rail Terminus, located between Ram Mandir and Jogeshwari stations on the east, is set to open within the next six months. This ₹69 crore project, under construction for nearly two years, aims to ease congestion at busy terminuses like Dadar, Bandra, and Mumbai Central by boosting train services.
As part of the initial plan, 12 train services will be shifted from Mumbai Central and Bandra to Jogeshwari, helping to create more capacity at other stations for additional suburban trains. Discussions are also underway to make Jogeshwari the terminus for high-speed trains like Vande Bharat and Tejas Express.
Island platform, modern facilities & more
The project, nearly two years in the making, features a state-of-the-art island platform stretching 600 meters in length and 12 meters in width, capable of accommodating 24-coach trains. A senior Western Railway official mentioned that the work was progressing well and that they expected most of the civil works to be completed by summer. He also noted that contractors had been assigned the task of achieving 70-75% completion by the end of March.
While the terminus promises improved connectivity with features like two berthing lines and a Power Run Down line for shunting, some concerns have emerged. Subhash Gupta, the president of the Railway Passenger Association, warned about the potential for overcrowding, stating that if two trains were to arrive and depart at the same time, passengers with luggage could face difficulties.
The facility, built near a former railway cement warehouse, will include coach watering facilities and essential infrastructure for efficient train operations.
