The Maharashtra government has announced plans to introduce a new policy aimed at promoting the construction of architecturally distinctive buildings in Mumbai. The initiative is set to enhance the city’s aesthetics and attract more tourists, with authorities revealing the details in the legislative council on Wednesday.
Landmark structures from the British era have played a key role in shaping Mumbai’s dynamic identity. The new policy seeks to preserve this legacy while encouraging the construction of iconic buildings that reflect the city’s world-class status.
Addressing current limitations for new buildings in Mumbai
Current Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) limit the construction of such structures in Mumbai. To address this, the government has proposed amendments to the regulations, which will introduce special provisions for the construction of iconic buildings.
In line with these changes, the state has initiated amendments under Section 37(1) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act. Further, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been instructed to implement these new provisions, ensuring that the city can accommodate buildings that will become symbolic landmarks.
