Eros Cinema, Mumbai’s 90-year-old heritage landmark, is set to regain its status as an icon of cinema after a seven-year break. The theatre will reopen for the first time since its last showing of the epic blockbuster “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” for the much awaited Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon film “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.” This show will debut at 10 AM on Friday, drawing crowds of moviegoers eager to experience the magic of the silver screen once more.
Iconic art deco facade enhanced with a modern touch
This reopening represents more than just a return to screen entertainment. A remarkable makeover has been made to the formerly expansive 1,300-seat single-screen theater. Its original layout has been altered, and it is now a 305-seat IMAX theater run by PVR Inox on the second floor, revitalising the building’s historic corridors.
Under the direction of renowned architect Hafeez Contractor and Metro Realty’s Atul Gupta, the restoration honors the rich history of the film industry while embracing modern sensibilities. Everything about the building, from maintaining the elaborate bas-relief murals to revitalising the outside with improved lighting, is a careful reflection of the commitment to maintaining the spirit of Eros Cinema.
One of the most culturally significant cinemas of India
Originally erected in 1938 within the Streamline Moderne Cambata Building, Eros Cinema stands as a testament to timeless architectural brilliance. Commissioned by Parsi businessman Shiavax Cawasji Cambata and designed by architect Sohrabji Bhedwar, its iconic art deco facade continues to captivate with its red Agra sandstone and cream paint, now complemented by a modernised aesthetic.
In a city where heritage is often overshadowed by rapid development, the restoration of Eros Cinema stands as a beacon of hope for preservationists and cinephiles alike. Atul Kumar, the founder of Art Deco Mumbai, aptly stated that they had transitioned from the verge of complete loss to witnessing its revival for another generation to enjoy and create memories. He emphasised that the reopening of Eros Cinema not only signifies the dawn of a fresh era of cinematic brilliance but also serves as a tribute to Mumbai’s abundant cultural heritage.
