A legacy of Maratha valour and heritage
The Nimbalkar clan, descendants of Parmar Rajputs, played a pivotal role in Maratha history. The fort, constructed by Kushaji Nimbalkar, grandson of Mankoji (a brother of the Phaltan royal family), is strewn with beautiful but crumbling havelis. British author Grant Duff, in his book History of Marathas, praised these havelis as the “most extensive edifices” he had seen in Maharashtra during the 1820s.
The fort’s connection to Chhatrapati Shivaji adds to its allure. Rani Dipabai, a Nimbalkar, was instrumental in arranging the marriage of Shivaji’s parents, Shahjiraje and Jijabai. The fort also witnessed the bravery of Nimbalkar warriors in battles like Medta, Nagore, and the Third Battle of Panipat.
Nimbalkar Fort’s ongoing revival
Though time has taken its toll, efforts to restore the fort are underway. Satyajit Jeetendra Nimbalkar, a descendant, has beautifully restored one of the havelis, including the Diwan Khana (darbar hall) and ancestral samadhis. The intricate woodwork and Maratha-style architecture, with a touch of South Indian influence, are a sight to behold.
