Mumbai (aka Bombay) is a magical city with a vibe that remains unmatched. Housing India’s most profiled film industry, Asia’s biggest Dhobi Ghat, a melting point of cultures, historical landmarks and a raging nightlife, Mumbai continues to surprise us every now and then.

So, commemorating this World Tourism Day ’23, here are some of our favourite tourist spots in Mumbai. Bookmark this article right away!

Gateway of India

One of Mumbai’s most famous tourist attractions, Gateway of India is a popular gathering spot for locals, street vendors, and photographers. It is a must visit to enjoy a dreamy sunset amid pleasant weather and a warm cup of tea.

Sassoon Dock

If a pungent fishy smell is something you can manage, Sassoon Dock is definitely worth checking out. Waking up at 5 o’clock in the morning, this is one of the oldest wholesale fish markets in Mumbai, featuring picturesque trawlers and Koli women in sarees, peeling mounds of shrimp.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus

Known as one of the busiest railway stations in India, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is also the headquarters of India’s Central Railway. Built by Britishers, this architectural marvel combines Indian and gothic revival designs with lions guarding the entrance.

Haji Ali Dargah

Haji Ali Dargah is a striking Indo-Islamic shrine built on a tiny islet located 500 meters from the coast, in the middle of Worli Bay. Constructed in 1431, in memory of a wealthy merchant—Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, the mosque is open for visitation only during low tides.

Mahalakshmi Dhobi Ghat

Built during the British Raj in 1890, Mahalakshmi Dhobi Ghat has coined the title of the “World’s Largest Outdoor Laundry”. This famous neighbourhood has debuted in many Bollywood movies for its scenic backdrop and countless rows of laundry.

Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, commonly known as ‘Mount Mary Church’, is a prominent Roman Catholic Church in Bandra, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Established in 1640 and restored in 1761, the church stands atop a hillside overlooking the Arabian Sea – making it a popular destination for tourists from all over the globe.

Juhu Beach

Flirting effortlessly with the magnificent blue sky, Juhu Beach captures the true essence of Mumbai. With sandy shores, lots of vendors selling small gifts to street-style food, this is one of the most popular tourist spots in Mumbai.

Marine Drive

A visit to Mumbai isn’t complete without walking down the famous Marine Drive. This 4 km-long curved boulevard alongside the coast is often referred to as the Queen’s Necklace, for its glowing string of street lights. Best time to visit would be sunset, when the street is lined with locals and tourists, and an endless slew of street food stalls.

Bandra Fort

Bandra Fort, also known as ‘Castella de Aguada’ (Portuguese for ‘Fort of the Waterpoint), is one of the most historic places in India and of course, Mumbai. The fort’s grandeur and its open sky and sea backdrop, make it a must-visit destination for history buffs, and nature lovers. Bandra Fort’s history can be traced back to the Portuguese, Maratha, and British eras. The Portuguese constructed the Bandra Fort in 1640. During the colonial era, it served as a watchtower, overlooking Mahim Bay and defence post.

Ranwar Village

A symphony of a heritage bailiwick, spiced up with a good deal of contemporary street art, awaits at Ranwar Village. When here, you’ll find yourself making your way through narrow streets, housing heritage buildings, quaint houses and erstwhile bungalows, that sing the tales of ‘Vandre’.
