Marking the auspicious occasion of Goa statehood day, the MoS (Independent Charge) for Ports, Shipping & Waterways launched the second floating jetty at Old Goa, through a virtual meeting. Offering ferry and cruise facilities, the jetty will act as a new means of connectivity between Old Goa and Panjim via the Mandovi River. It is expected that the commuters will be able to take easy and trouble-free journeys between the two important locations in the coastal state.

As per reports, the union government had given its approval for constructing two concrete floating jetties across National Waterway 68 on Mandovi River. This intervention was planned with an aim to connect Old Goa and Panjim. While the first jetty situated at Captain of Ports, Panjim started operations on February 21, 2020, the state has received the second facility of its kind at Old Goa now.
Besides costing nearly 20% of the price of fixed jetties, concrete floating jetties come with other advantages too. It is noteworthy that they can be quickly installed and are simple to use. Reports state that they are expected to be functional for up to 50 years and do not require CRZ clearances. Additionally, they can be customised as per the needs of a particular location.
As per reports, the minister stated that the Mormugaon Post has been highly beneficial for the state’s progress. He further affirmed that it is expected that the floating jetty will boost the state’s tourism sector. Reportedly, he also applauded the state’s efforts to convert the tourism sector into the driver of economic development.
