In an effort to provide medicines at lower costs to residents, the Indian Institute of Technology Indore is going to start a Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra outside its campus. This kendra will make cheap medicines available not only for its students and staff but also to villagers residing near the institution. The institute granted consent to the Ministry of Chemical and Fertilizers consent to open this facility.

The proposal was put out on the table at a Board of Governors meeting, which gave in principle approval for opening this Aushadhi Kendra. IIT Indore's (acting) Professor Nilesh Jain, stated that the Jan Aushadhi Center may be functional by March, 2021.

He mentioned that initially, the plan was for opening the Jan Aushadhi Kendra inside the campus but the institute later thought that people living in nearby villages should also benefit from. So the decision was upgraded and now the store will be set up outside the main entrance of the institute. IIT Indore has also taken several measures like setting up utility stores and a cafeteria, to make the life of the staff and students, comfortable.

The institute campus is located around 20 kilometres from the main city of Indore and on this expanse, several townships and villages are located. These villagers do not have access to cheap medicines and most of them have to travel to the city to grab whatever their prescription demands. So once this store is established, they will all have access to the medicines which are marked at higher costs in other pharmacies.
