Sludge Hygienization facility in Indore goes Solar

Sagar Purswani

In a bid to gauge over 300 carbon credits per year, Indore Smart City Development Ltd. (ISCDL) has initiated work to power a Sludge Hygienization facility in Indore's Kabitkhedi with Solar power at an estimated cost of over ₹77 lakhs. As per the reports, the work to fit solar power at the facility is expected to be complete by July 15.

Targeting over 1800 carbon credits annually

The move is aimed at reducing the civic body's dependency on fossil fuel-based electricity, which costs around ₹3 lakhs a month. As per officials, this 180 Kv mega solar plant will produce over 21,000 units of electricity per month, providing a benefit of ₹1 lakh a month. Considering this state of affairs, the civic body will save ₹12 lakhs annually, rebating the total cost of the project in 6 years.

Additionally, the solar panel installation company will be tasked with maintaining the facility for the next five years. Located at Kabit Khedi, Indore, this Sludge Hygienization facility is the second such facility that uses Cobalt-60 unit to convert dry sludge into bio-fertilisers.

Built by Symec Engineers (India) Pvt Ltd in collaboration with Indore Smart City Limited and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the facility got the final approval for Solar Power earlier this year.

A similar step was taken by the Indore civic body in 2019, when the sewerage treatment facility at Kabit Khedi, Indore was solar-powered with a capacity of 1500 kV, which received over 1500 carbon credits every year.

With more such initiatives in the pipeline, the Indore Smart City Development Ltd plans to solar power all heavy electricity consumption facilities in the Indore.
