Kanpur is gearing up for a major transformation, with projects worth around ₹20,900 crore set to give the city’s infrastructure a significant push. From metro expansion and road upgrades to elevated railway tracks, power projects and better wastewater management, there’s a lot in the works.
The 32.4-km Kanpur Metro network covers two corridors: IIT Kanpur–Naubasta and Agriculture University–Barra-8. The ₹2,120-crore-plus Chunniganj–Kanpur Central stretch includes five underground stations: Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj and Kanpur Central.
Meanwhile, GT Road improvements, the widening of Gauria Pali Marg and a proposed four-lane road from Narwal Mode on the Prayagraj Highway to the Kanpur Defence Corridor aim to improve traffic flow and industrial access.
Another major project is the proposed 15.51-km elevated railway track between Anwarganj and Mandhana, estimated at ₹1,115 crore. With around 400 pillars and a proposed Atal Station near Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, connected to the metro, it aims to ease congestion at railway crossings. Two railway overbridges at Panki Power House Railway Crossing and Panki Dham Crossing are also planned.
The energy projects include the 660-MW Panki Thermal Power Extension Project, costing over ₹8,300 crore, and the 1,980-MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Project, worth over ₹9,330 crore. Additionally, a 40-million-litres-per-day tertiary wastewater treatment plant at Bingawan, costing over ₹290 crore, will support water reuse.
Together, these projects could give Kanpur's infrastructure a significant upgrade, with smoother commutes, stronger power supply and better industrial connectivity. Their real impact will depend on timely execution.
