Monsoon arrives in UP via southern districts again; Lucknow to receive heavy rain by June 23

Southwest Monsoon made its first appearance in Uttar Pradesh on June 18, breaking usual patterns by entering through the southern districts, for the second consecutive year. Traditionally, monsoon enters the state from the east, through Ballia and Gorakhpur. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance further into more parts of the state over the next 2 to 3 days.

Monsoon progression timeline in UP

  • June 18: Gorakhpur

  • June 23: Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj

  • June 24: Jhansi, Bareilly

  • June 25: Mainpuri

  • June 27: Agra, Bijnor

Rain reduces deficit to 27%

Rainfall on Wednesday brought relief from heat and reduced the state's rainfall deficit from 46% to 27%. Ayodhya recorded 25.8 mm, Churk 5.6 mm, and Sultanpur 5.2 mm. IMD has forecast increased rainfall across the state from Thursday, with heavy to very heavy showers likely between June 19 and 22.
