In a bid to make Mumbai roads safe for rider, and to bring down the number of traffic rule violations, Mumbai Police has been implementing their traffic safety norms with every passing day. As per the announcement last week, now pillions without a helmet will also be fined under the Motor Vehicle Act. The Mumbai police's crackdown on traffic violators has forced people to line up outside helmet shops.

These seemingly small acts of negligence are a punishable offence under the Motor Vehicles Act. Every pillion caught without a helmet will be fined a sum of ₹500 along with the rider facing a license suspension. The Mumbai Police has been warning motorists, and vehicle owners to abide by the traffic rules or pay handsome fines.

Apart from penalising the motorists and the pillions without authorised ISI-mark helmets, the police have also been really strict with other traffic rules including, fining the traffic on the wrong side. According to the reports, over 1.86 lakh challans have been issued between March and May against helmetless riders.

Known for their fun, and catchy tweets, Mumbai Traffic Police's Twitter handle posted a now-viral video featuring the cricketing legend, Sachin Tendulkar asking pillion to sport helmets on motorcycles for a safe ride.
