Mumbai's first travellator-equipped skywalk linking Metro, Monorail and local trains is 90% complete

Mumbai's public transport network is set to become more seamless as Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed nearly 90% of the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project. Once operational, the project will introduce India's first travellator-equipped skywalk, linking the Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail Station, Mahalaxmi Metro Station on Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line), and Mahalaxmi Railway Station on the Western Railway suburban network.

Designed to simplify transfers between three major transport systems, the project is expected to significantly improve daily commuting for thousands of Mumbaikars.

Transfer time to reduce by nearly 20 minutes

The integrated pedestrian corridor has been planned to eliminate the need for commuters to navigate congested roads or multiple staircases while changing between the Metro, Monorail and suburban railway.

According to MMRDA, the new interchange will reduce transfer time by 20 minutes and improve access to the Mumbai Monorail from South Mumbai and Worli.

Skywalk to feature six travellators and lifts

The project includes a 283-metre-long elevated pedestrian bridge with an 11-metre-wide deck designed to accommodate heavy passenger movement. It will be equipped with six travellators spanning a combined length of 176 metres, along with two passenger lifts to ensure accessibility for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and travellers carrying luggage.

The interchange is expected to handle around 4,500 passengers every hour, making it one of the city's key transport integration projects.

Complex construction completed with minimal disruption

MMRDA said the project involved significant engineering challenges due to the dense network of underground utilities at the site. Before foundation work could begin, engineers relocated an 1,800 mm-diameter storm-water drain while ensuring nearby water supply and sewer pipelines continued operating without disruption.

Construction was also carried out in coordination with the Mumbai Traffic Police to minimise inconvenience along the busy Sane Guruji Marg corridor.
