Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away on Monday at the age of 90, at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai, after battling a chronic kidney-related illness. His funeral was held today at the Shivaji Park Electric Crematarium in Mumbai. Benegal was renowned for his films’ realism, depth and storytelling mastery. His death marks the end of an era in Indian filmmaking.

Benegal's notable works include Ankur, Mandi, Manthan, and Nishant, all of which became icons of the Parallel Cinema Movement in India during the 70s and 80s. His film Nishant was even showcased at Cannes, a monumental moment for Indian cinema.

Known for exploring complex themes and inventing strong female characters, Benegal won multiple National Film Awards throughout his career. He also directed influential documentaries and television series, such as Bharat Ek Khoj (1988) and Samvidhaan (2014), which explored India’s Constitution.
