Vehicle registration goes online in Mumbai & other Maha districts amid pandemic restrictions

Vehicle registration becomes completely digital- faceless and paperless in Mumbai and across.

In a major digital initiative, the Maharashtra government on Wednesday completely shifted the vehicle registration process online. Circumventing the cumbersome details, the procedure promotes the 'Ease of Doing Business' policy with its key faceless and paperless feature now. The change is also streamlined with the objective of staggering crowds at public spaces, in view of the COVID-19 second wave's compulsion.

Vehicle registration no longer requires physical document verification

Corresponding to the rules notified by the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, the state Transport Commissioner issued an order late on Tuesday night to launch e-registration of vehicles in Maharashtra. As per this circular, the applicant can submit all documents related to vehicle registrations online, digitally signed and attested. This would cancel the need to physically verify the papers for the first registration of new two or four-wheelers, it highlighted. The registry numbers shall be auto-generated at the dealerships.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers' Association (FADA) welcomed this ease where the President, Vinkesh Gulati, enumerated its benefits as an effective time-saving model. It will also eliminate the need to make physical trips to the RTOs. He added that FADA aims to implement this online system of registration across the nation. He thanked the Chief Minister, the Transport Minister and other officials for this decision, which he argued will promote the 'Ease of Doing Business' in a big way.

The FADA Maharashtra Chairperson, Amar Jatin Sheth informed that the organisation has been in favour of this system for a long time. He said that this system averts the many hassles linked with registration and documentation. The time has come when a customer "can walk into a showroom and drive out with a vehicle and a registration number", he added.
