The skilful construction and strategic placement of Reis Magos Fort, much larger and popular than the Aguada Fort, command the awe of tourists that have an eye for magnificence. Initially built as a military outpost by the Sultanate of Bijapur in 1493, the fort was constructed by the Portuguese in 1551, after defeating the native rulers. A heritage site popularly believed to be named after the Biblical anecdote of the Three Wise Men, this place is a heaven for all those who are looking to explore the Goa of yore!

Regenerating historical interest through modern events

Located near to the capital city, the laterite walls of Reis Magos Fort showcase an architectural synthesis of Hindu and Portuguese styles. Apart from a spellbinding view, this well-preserved fort is home to ‘Freedom Fighter’s Gallery’, ‘Art Gallery’, ‘History & Restoration Hall’ and ‘Gunloops’, thereby, making this place a haven for both history buffs and art lovers.

In an attempt to show how historically important spaces can bring communities together, the citadel and bastion areas of the fort are often used as event spaces. The events that liven up the interiors of Reis Magos Fort range from book launches and weddings to film and photoshoots!

How to reach?

Located hardly 8 km from Panjim, the 20 minutes (approx.) journey between the capital city and the fort can be easily covered via road. The Goa International Airport is almost 35 km away and one can easily hire a cab and make their way to the Reis Magos Fort. Further, while you are here, you can also take short detours to nearby places such as Fontainhas and Chorla Ghats.

Knock Knock

Adding to the panoramic view of the Reis Magos Fort are more than 33 vintage and original armaments, along with a church located within the ramparts. Don’t forget to put on comfortable shoes as you begin to traverse the fort area and capture every moment in detail so that your snail mail to your pen pal is full of doting anecdotes!

Museum Timings: 11 AM to 5.30 PM

Days: Open all days except Monday

Location: Verem, Bardez, Goa
