Earlier, the tourism department of Goa had made amendments in the tourism act which prohibits the consumption of alcohol and cooking at public places. Now to reinstate the same, the concerned authorities have started installing signboards at beaches across the state, proclaiming the dos and don’ts. The list further includes restrictions on nudity, spitting, littering, smoking, cooking food in the open and so on. As per the signs, anyone found drinking on the beach will be slapped with a fine of ₹2,000 while any group caught doing so, will have to shell out ₹10,000.
Littering of beaches pose threats to humans and animals alike
The authorities are yet again strengthening this directive in the state, as during the influx of tourists throughout the span of the holiday season, Goa beaches were littered expansively with alcohol bottles, glass shards and other sorts of garbage. This poses several dangers for the people strolling at the beach and even for the animals and marine life around. Further, if the fine is not paid, the scale of offence registered will surge and the offender can be imprisoned for up to three months. Even openly carrying alcohol bottles in a public place or on the beach, is strictly restricted.
The tourism director has also stated that a dedicated tourist police force is also being chalked, to keep a check on such nuisance created by the tourists. The director also mentioned that the beaches are cleaned thrice a day but cleaning out minute pieces of glass or plastic from under the sand, isn’t really possible.
