A surface disinfectant device developed by Raja Mamanna Center for Advanced Technologies (RRTCAT) was handed over to the Indore Airport authorities, on Tuesday. ‘NeelBhasmi‘ is an ICMR approved gadget that will now be used at the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport to disinfect large surfaces and prevent further contamination due to the coronavirus, on a trial basis. Further, it will eliminate the currently in practice manual cleaning, which is tedious, time-consuming and makes use of harmful chemicals.

In a small ceremony organised at the airport terminal building on Tuesday, 2 units of NeelBhasmi were handed over to the Director of Indore Airport. Further, the Head of Laser Biomedical Applications Division and Inventor of the device, Dr. Majumdar, explained the functioning and operation of the device and also gave a demonstration. He also pointed out that, with the onset of the pandemic, such disinfection technology has become the need of the hour, especially at places where large gatherings occur.
How does NeelBhasmi work?
Developed at RRTCAT, Indore, NeelBhasmi is a UV-C light-based mobile disinfection device that uses 253.7 nm UV-C light generated by low-pressure mercury lamps. This device efficiently utilises UV-C radiation for remote disinfection of the air and other large surfaces, such as furniture, located inside a room.
The efficacy of NeelBhasmi as a disinfection device against SARS-CoV2 was evaluated at two facilities- Bio-safety Level 3 Laboratory in ESIC Medical College in Hyderabad and an ICMR approved laboratory for COVID-19 test. During the tests, myriad materials, kept at different heights over an area of 15 square metres, were tested and NeelBhasmi successfully disinfected all of them.
