Considering the stark increase in the number of Bone Marrow Transplants (BMT) in Indore and other MP districts, the Indore health administration will shift the BMT unit from MGM Hospital to the Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) by November 14. This move will help fill the medical gap which has arisen due to a lack of proper facilities at MGM Hospital.
BMT facility will cater to increased number of patients
The facility at the Super Specialty Hospital underwent an inspection by the Divisional Commissioner, Pawan Sharma and MP, Shankar Lalwani on Thursday. After this, the process to increase the number of beds for patients was also sped up. Reportedly, the number of beds in the unit will increase from 5 to 10, and will help medical professionals better cater to the influx of patients.
In the past, the spread of COVID-19 had slowed down the pace of Bone Marrow Transplants. Only 55 BMT transplants were performed in Indore since 2018. With the pandemic waning, the department aims at performing at least 50 BMTs in the new facility in a short span of time.
Increased BMT demand-availability gap
With an aim to register more patients for BMT, the MGM Hospital has been organising various camps. A total of 100 patients were registered in the health camp in Ratlam and over 300 patients were registered during the health camp in Indore for BMT. A similar camp was organised in Jabalpur as well.
The upcoming BMT unit at SSH will be the only government-run BMT facility in the state with a success rate of 85%.
