Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium set for ₹350 crore overhaul; comeback on cards!

One of India’s oldest cricket grounds, the stadium has witnessed several legendary fixtures.

Green Park Stadium, one of Kanpur’s most storied sporting venues, is set for a major overhaul after a ₹350 crore budget allocation was earmarked for its modernisation. Earlier in 2026, authorities announced an 18-month redevelopment roadmap aimed at addressing long-pending infrastructure gaps at the stadium.

The revamp will go beyond spectator facilities, with plans to upgrade the drainage network beneath the playing field alongside improvements to the existing stands. In the opening phase, old audience galleries are expected to be demolished to make way for new infrastructure, including a modern players’ pavilion and a dedicated media centre.

Modern Makeover Aims to Bring Big-Ticket Cricket Back to Green Park

If ₹350 crore was already being invested in the redevelopment of Green Park International Stadium, it would have been more strategic to allocate an additional ₹100-150 crore and develop a new 50,000-capacity stadium at a more open, planned location in Kanpur.

A significant feature of the new construction will be the installation of a modern sub-surface drainage system capable of absorbing 10,000 litres of water per minute, allowing the field to become playable approximately 15 minutes after rainfall stops. The announcement follows a series of issues, including disruptions during the India vs Bangladesh Test in 2024, when rain affected play.

Green Park is undergoing major renovations to enhance the fan experience, with upgraded seating, new corporate boxes, and premium VIP lounges. The project will also introduce advanced fitness, medical, and recovery facilities for athletes. In addition, spectators can expect improved services across the venue, including better food and beverage options.

Currently, Green Park remains operational, subject to limited availability, though it has not hosted any major international cricket events over the past 1.5 years. Domestic and occasional matches continue to be held at the venue, albeit less frequently than before. The planned renovations are expected to help re-establish Green Park as a leading cricket venue and pave the way for the return of IPL and international matches once the work is completed.

The Legacy of Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium

Green Park Stadium was completed in 1945 and is situated near the Ganga River, making it one of India’s oldest cricket grounds. The stadium has a seating capacity of around 45,000 and is traditionally known for its flat pitch, which has generally favoured batsmen.

Green Park holds a storied place in cricket history, famously witnessing Mohammad Azharuddin’s run of three consecutive Test centuries and several high-scoring contests. Its legacy is built on decades of international competition, including its important role as a host venue during the 1987 Cricket World Cup.

With teams from over 50 nations having played at the venue, it has produced memorable moments involving stars such as Shahid Afridi and continues to remain an important part of Indian cricket heritage.

A Beloved Landmark, Now Ready for Its Next Chapter

Beyond cricket, Green Park Stadium has long served as a civic landmark, bringing together the people of Kanpur through public functions, gatherings, and major events. The venue is versatile enough to host football, hockey, badminton, table tennis, and volleyball, while also accommodating concerts, political rallies, and large cultural programmes. It is also home to a cricket museum, remains a popular destination for morning walkers, and retains its distinctive manual scoreboard; a rare feature that sets it apart in today’s digital era.

Experts and government officials believe that despite the ongoing redevelopment, the stadium still holds strong potential to return as a regular host for international cricket, including Test matches, IPL fixtures, and domestic tournaments. Once restored to its former stature, Green Park could also emerge as a wider economic catalyst for the region by generating indirect employment, supporting local businesses, and strengthening sports tourism across Uttar Pradesh.
