In an attempt to clean the sacred yet polluted Ganga River, Kanpur Municipal Corporation in association with Kanpur Smart City Limited has initiated a special project. Under the ambit of the Smart City Mission, the authority has installed a ‘Trash Skimmer & Weed Remover’ machine in Kanpur. Manufactured in Mumbai, this specialised machine has been effective in the removal of trash like polythene, clothes, metal items, puja wastes, dead animals and birds among other wastes from the river water. In addition to this, this machine is also extremely helpful in removing water hyacinth (Jalkumbhi) that tends to ruin the river water. Procured by Kanpur Smart City Limited at a cost of ₹1.9 Crores, this machine will be operated by Kanpur Municipal Corporation.

According to officials, this device will clean and cover 8 kilometres stretch of Ganga on a daily basis. As per the Service Level Agreement with the service provider company, all important aspects of running and maintenance of this machine will be covered by the firm that has supplied the device.
However, the cost of maintenance and operation will be borne by KSCL for the next five years. Post this period, the machine will come under the ownership of Kanpur Municipal Corporation which will then be responsible for all its expenses.
In addition to this, an Environment Engineer of KMC will be deployed to monitor the operations of this machine on a daily basis. After the supervision, the officer will then meet the CEO of Kanpur Smart City directly to share the report of the day. With this move, the administration aims to move one step closer to a cleaner Ganga and therefore a cleaner Kanpur.
