Kanpur is a city of noises, from the overzealous auto-rickshaw drivers playing loud music to that one aunty shouting on her neighbour. The streets here are forever lively, they are full of activity, people busy on the daily grind, never slowing down to take a minute off and we like our city like this. Yet, often, stuck in the hustle of everyday life, we long for a small corner, a peaceful escape where watching the sun go down isn’t a luxury but a commonplace thing. Thankfully the newly renovated Ganga ghats in Kanpur serve as just the thing.
With the city so overwhelming with sounds, smells and activity, the ghats have always been our source of calm, a place for the thinkers, the dreamers and a haven for the spiritually inclined. The ghats have finally been renovated and the city of Kanpur seems prettier from around here.
What actually changed?
Under the Namami Gange program, the Sarsaiya ghat in Kanpur has been revamped to facilitate the pilgrims and the locals who flock the ghats for spiritual and religious reasons.
New steps have been constructed along the ghat, prayer spots, changing rooms, toilets, green area and floodlights have also been installed at the ghats. Other than that, the ghat has also been provided with adequate funds to ensure that they are cleaned and maintained properly.
Under the scheme a 102-metre long ‘Atal Ghat’ near Ganga Barrage has just been constructed and a total of 11 ghats have been constructed and renovated all over the city.
The ghat renovation and construction has also ensured that the river stays clean and there is a proper place for the pilgrims and the tourists to sit at, watch the aarti or just the stunning sunset.
