To improve the green cover of Kanpur, the city which ranks quite high in the pollution index, 14,500 saplings have been planted on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti at Jageshwar Hospital, Kanpur South. This area is now being identified as an ‘oxygen playground ‘ and the administration has hopes that it will contribute in improving the environmental situation of the city in the future.

Authorities have undertaken this 23 acres of green venture in order to boost public health and welfare in the city. They have planted around 26 types of plants including Peepal, Banyan, amidst others and the entire project expenditure stands at approximately 23 lakhs. The plan was being chalked out for the past 6 months and finally, it has seen the light of the day; it was inaugurated on October 2 by the mayor of the city. According to reports, the idea behind this park actually belongs to the Municipal Commissioner of Kanpur.
The area where the park has been established, is quite close to the industrial area, which is why the pollution levels here are mostly high and it has become a reason of several health issues for the residents nearby. Keeping this in sight, the setting up of such a park was initiated. Nagar Nigam will be taking care of this space and a gardener along with a security guard for the nurturing of the saplings, will be assigned. Citizens will be allowed to come over for their usual walks here and soon, other localities in the city, might also have such a dedicated space.

Given the brimming population of the city, the citizens too need to adopt eco-friendly behavioural patterns or else, such efforts will fall flat in procuring the desired results. As responsible residents, people need to become more aware about their carbon footprints and take necessary steps to reduce it.
