Ama yaar! These 11 slang terms are very much real, very much Lucknow

Ever landed in Lucknow and felt like everyone’s speaking a whole different vibe? Because honestly, they are. Lakhnavi slang hits different, and no dictionary’s gonna save you. We know the list is endless, this city’s got more phrases than it has kebab varieties, and that’s saying something. So we picked the ones that’ll make you go “ama yaar, yeh toh sach hai!” Round two? Always on the cards.

Ama yaar/Ama miyaan

You haven’t truly experienced Lucknow until someone hits you with an “Ama yaar/Ama miyaan!“, equal parts shock, drama, and pure desi soul. Feeling low because something unpleasant happened? Chances are, your Lakhnavi friend won’t let you sulk for long. Instead, they’ll wave it off with a classic, “Ama hatao… chalo kadak chai pilaate hain!”

Charas na bo

You know that one person who just won’t quit? Keeps poking, keeps pushing, keeps being a lot? Lucknow has exactly three words for them, “Charas na bo!” Basically, “enough already, stop bugging me!”

Tafri kaatna

Lucknow runs on chai, nazaakat, and tafri kaatna. Roughly translated? Hanging out with zero purpose and absolutely no regrets. Could be roaming in Ganj with your gang, chilling at a dhaba for hours, or just sitting around doing kuchh nahi, if it’s fun, unplanned, and slightly unproductive, bas tafri chal rahi hai, bhai!

Golibaaz, Gola Tikana

Got a friend who promises to show up and never does? Swears they’re “almost there” for three hours straight? Has a story for everything but receipts for nothing? Lucknow’s already clocked them, they’re a certified Golibaaz. And the fine art of fooling someone, stringing them along, or making them wait endlessly? Now thats called “Gola tikana.”

Adding ‘dis’ as a suffix in every word

Lucknow didn’t just give you slang, it gave you a whole grammar upgrade. Just slap a “dis” at the end of basically any word and suddenly you’re fluent, kardis, boldis, maardis. Did it, said it, done it, all with extra swag. No explanation needed, bas kardis.

Baura gaye ho

Did something absolutely unhinged just happen? Someone asked for something ridiculous? Plans went completely off the rails? Lucknow has one rhetoric reply for all of it, “Baura gaye ho?!” Straight up asking if you’ve lost the plot. And depending on the tone, it’s shock, it’s disbelief, it’s concern, sometimes even affection.

Laafa/Lappad

Lucknow is all love and tehzeeb, until you push it too far. Then comes the warning, “Laafa maarenge abhi!” or the classic “lappad khaogey?” No raised voices, no long speeches. Just one crisp, no-nonsense threat of a slap that somehow sounds terrifying and yet comes with a dash of nazaakat.

Bhaukaal

Walks in slow, doesn’t need to say much, just exists loudly — that’s pure bhaukaal, emanating from a bhaukaali person from Lucknow. Its a word for that one person who’s always performing, always posturing, always trying to look like the main character. Bhaukaal could be attitude, could be showing off, could be straight-up bluffing. There’s even a saying, “Bhaukal tight, future bright.“

Nassudhh laga diye hain

Everything going wrong for absolutely no reason? Plans flopping, chai spilling, autowala overcharging, all in one day? Lucknow knows exactly what’s up, someone’s gone and put nassudhh on you. Bad luck, bad energy, bad omen, all rolled into one dramatic accusation. Blame the situation, blame a person, blame the universe. Nassudhhi lag gai hai bhai, simple.

Jaahil

Lucknow will forgive a lot, but bad manners? Absolutely not. Jaahil is the city’s classiest insult, and yes, classy insults are very much a thing here. No shouting, no drama, just one withering look and a slow “kitna jahil aadmi hai” that cuts deeper than anything. In a city obsessed with Tehzeeb, this one word is basically a life sentence!

Ul Jalool

Ul Jalool is what you say when someone starts talking absolute nonsense, things too illogical (or too stupid) to even entertain. It’s originally an Urdu word, but in Lucknow, it’s practically public property. You’ll hear it tossed around casually on the streets, in living rooms, at chai stalls.

“Ul jalool baat na karo, yaar” — which, in true Lakhnavi fashion, is the polite version of: Bro… please get it together.
