With the advent of new mutant strains and increasing speed of infections, Lucknow stands blanketed amid the deadly second COVID wave. While a cumulative tally of 85,879 infections was recorded in Lucknow till March 31, since the start of the pandemic, the case count marked an alarming hike of 138% by the month of April alone. As of now, 2,11,347 individuals have been affected by the fatal contagion in the city and 59.4% of these were registered in the last month.
Flattened U-shaped curve may carry positive implications for the future!
After a comfortably controlled count of daily fresh cases recorded in the early months of 2021, the tallies sprung up in the last few days of March followed by unprecedented spikes in April. Pushed by repetitive surges, the highest-ever count of 6,598 cases was logged on April 16 and the figures oscillated in the precarious zone for the next few days.
Surprisingly, sharp downfalls have been witnessed in the past week and the citizens are deliberating over the fact if the data can be trusted. If these numbers are to be believed, then the pressed U-shaped curve being formed, hints at optimistic observations for the future! On Monday, 3,058 COVID cases were registered in Lucknow.
Fatalities multiplied by almost 49% in the month of April!
As per the released figures, 588 fatalities have been witnessed in the month of April, which is 48.55% more than the total deaths registered till the end of March 2021. In simplified terms, the virus has snuffed as much as half the count of lives lost during one full year of the pandemic, in just a period of 30 days. Though amplified infection rate and a high number of positive detections account for direct reasons behind this heart-wrenching spike, the circumstances definitely call for a deeper inspection of what went wrong for Lucknow.
The rate of recoveries, the only respite!
Amid the present dire circumstances, the high rate of recoveries being witnessed in Lucknow is the brightest light of hope for the city folks. As per records, 59,488 citizens have recovered from the infection in the past 10 days. If the recovery graph maintains a stable position, the elevated burden on the city’s medical infrastructure will be relieved soon. Notably, active tallies of COVID patients have gone down considerably and the figure stood at 36,384 on Monday.
Urgent need for sweeping, stringent & streamlined measures!
Despite multiple initiatives by the administration, the tallies of active patients show no significant signs of plummeting anytime soon. While the Sunday lockdown transformed into an extended weekend lockdown and now the curfew is being continued for a period of 5 days, there still remains enough scope for augmented actions. If stricter and large-scale interventions are not deployed quickly, the pandemic may take a deadlier trajectory in Lucknow. Further, it is important to remember that the benefit of any administrative measure can only be reaped if it is coupled with citizens’ cooperations.
