As the year comes to a close, can you recall all the remarkable trends and memes that left their mark in 2024? If not, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a month-by-month roundup of the memes and trends that dominated our feeds, made us laugh, sparked shareable content, and were eventually forgotten in the ever-evolving world of social media:

January

Remember this meme from earlier this year? The first time we heard that witty comeback, “Gian hain aap,” it had us rolling with laughter! The unexpected and comedic timing of the reply made it an unforgettable moment. Even now, it still finds its way into our conversations with friends.

February

The meme “Brother eww,” which became quite popular around Feb, isn’t just a meme—it’s a whole sentiment toolkit! It’s the perfect reply when a friend makes a questionable choice or when you want to express that unmistakable feeling of cringe. Whether through GIFs or meme templates, this gem has cemented its place in internet culture and will likely stick around for a while.

Similarly, the iconic Rajnikanth meme from Shivaji: The Boss is a masterpiece for text-based conversations, adding that extra flair of brilliance to any chat.

The viral sensation from Pakistan, Bado Badi, took both countries by storm this year like no other. With its cringe-worthy lyrics and vocals that could make anyone want to pull their hair out, the song became an internet meme for its sheer absurdity—and ironically, people can’t get enough of it now!

Meanwhile, an old video resurfaced online, featuring a girl confidently saying, “Level sabke niklenge.” The catch? It appears she was promoting India’s infamous pyramid schemes, albeit in her own unique and unintentionally humorous style.

Imagine this, first, memes flood the internet featuring MS Dhoni’s lookalike grooving to the song “Bole Jo Koyal.” Then, in a wild twist, a company steps in and convinces the legendary cricketer himself to sing the song, while promoting their cycles! Unsurprisingly, the ad itself turns into a meme.

The first time we saw it, it was pure disbelief—how did things escalate to this point? Well, there’s now a whole video on YouTube detailing how the marketing team managed to convince Mahi to take on this unexpected musical challenge.

May

In today’s age of bizarre trends, anything can become a viral meme. Take the children’s poem “Aha Tamatar,” for instance—it dominated stories, memes, and reels this year, spreading like wildfire.

On the other hand, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi made a significant mark on the internet, especially after its release in May. While the show inspired fashion influencers, cinema enthusiasts, and music pages, the buzz was equally fueled by heated discussions about its shortcomings. Sharmin Segal, in particular, faced heavy trolling and controversy online, with her performance drawing widespread criticism.

June

The Instagram community was already well-acquainted with Nagpur’s legendary Dolly Chai Wala, famous for his unique tea-making style (often a target for lighthearted trolling). But this year, the internet was truly bamboozled when none other than Bill Gates visited India and was spotted enjoying a cup of tea at Dolly Chai Wala’s thela!

Speculation ran wild—perhaps Dolly’s signature style had already made its way to Gates’ Instagram feed, sparking his curiosity to witness it in person.

July

Did you also try your hand at replicating Vicky Kaushal’s iconic “Tauba Tauba” dance step? Back in July, both the song and the actor’s effortless ‘Rizz’ were all the rage on social media.

After making headlines in March with a star-studded pre-wedding bash in Jamnagar, the extravagant wedding of Radhika Merchant and Anant Ambani became an even bigger sensation on social media.

The grand affair left everyone in awe, as the Ambanis hosted not only top celebrities from the Indian film industry and renowned singers but also international icons like Kim Kardashian, John Cena, and Nick Jonas. With an estimated expenditure of around ₹5000 crore, the wedding was truly a phenomenon in itself!

August

Even after TikTok’s ban in India, the app’s influence continues to linger on social media in India. One of the first memes to circulate around August was related to the late Danish Zehen, a famous TikToker. A fan’s emotional tribute to him sparked viral attention.

Another meme that left a lasting impact featured an American beauty influencer on TikTok describing her makeup as “very demure, very mindful.” This statement became a phenomenon across social platforms. In fact, it gained so much traction that the word ‘demure’ was crowned Word of the Year on Dictionary.com!

September

This year saw a surprising trend of children stepping into the roles of motivational speakers and self-styled “babas”. Among them, one particular kid from this emerging community became a viral meme sensation, drawing some lighthearted trolling.

What made him stand out? His unique mix of Hindi and a heavy regional accent, added an extra layer of hilarity to his already amusing persona!

October

The Dilluminati Tour took India by storm, with grand concerts which started from the month of October, across the country staged on an international scale. Diljit Dosanjh’s electrifying performances were the talk of the town, but so were the controversies surrounding him!

From claims about hand signs during his shows suggesting links to the Illuminati to criticism over promoting songs centred on liquor, the sensational debates kept social media buzzing. Diljit, however, addressed the controversies in his signature style; delivering sharp, witty replies during his performances, leaving fans entertained and critics silenced.

November

Comedian Samay Raina has taken India’s standup comedy scene by storm. His YouTube show, India’s Got Latent, is a constant source of hilarious clips, memes, and trending moments.

And of course, who can forget the “Juice Pilado” clip? The sheer absurdity of it continues to leave us in stitches every time we hear it!

December

Finally, there’s Chill Guy, the global phenomenon taking over everywhere—even appearing on billboards!

Is he a dog, or a bear? It doesn’t really matter. What matters is that he embodies the essence of being laid-back, unaffected by the chaos around him, and at peace with himself. If only we could all be like him!
