Stepping forward with the construction plans for the Kanpur-Lucknow expressway, the National Highway Authority of India has issued a tender in this regard. All set to begin construction within 6 months, this expressway will be the first highway in Uttar Pradesh to be linked to Lucknow’s Ring Road for easier vehicular movements. Expected to be ready by 2024, this 63-Km long facility will reduce the travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur to nearly 45 minutes.

Reportedly, it is expected that nearly 12 firms will apply for the bid. As per reports, the company will be finalised within 45 days and the contract will be awarded during this period by opening technical and financial bids. Reportedly, this upcoming road will be built at an approximate cost of ₹4,700 crores, reducing the travel time by half of itself.
Post the waiting period of 45 days, an MoU will be signed by the NHAI, which would also state that the construction company chosen for the project will have to start the work in about 5 months. Reportedly, 31 villages in Unnao and 11 districts of Lucknow have been chosen for land acquisition to construct the expressway. As per reports, the expressway will start near Shaheed Path and after this, Nawabganj will be linked to Kanpur via Banthra, Bani, Datouli and Kantha.

A resident of Lucknow, Utkarsh Gupta, said, “I have been travelling to Kanpur since 5 years due to my work but with the passage of time, I feel tired while commuting everyday because of the potholes and unfinished roads. I am eagerly waiting for the expressway to be constructed so that I am able to save some time of the day for myself”.
The proposed expressway will run parallel to the existing NH-25, at a distance of 3.5 Km. NHAI has proposed to build the facility in the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) which means that the government pays a fixed amount initially for a specific time period and then shifts the payment to a variable amount in the remaining time frame. Besides, the selected agency will also have to look after the maintenance of the expressway.
