The able medical staff at Lucknow’s esteemed King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has successfully performed a sex-change surgery. Wherein, a 15-year-old brought up as a girl, who had both male internal organs and chromosomes, was transformed into a ‘boy’.
The teenager, who was extremely conflicted when it came to gender, cleared the required evaluations, convincing the doctors in favour of the sex-change surgery.
A physical transformation
Senior faculty of KGMU urology department Prof Vishwajeet Singh, who led the surgical team, shared, “He was living as a girl since childhood as parents could not understand the ambiguity of the gender. The patient was a boy, but looked like a girl on the basis of outer appearance, which made parents bring him up as a girl.”
After clearing a psychological examination, the child also passed the genetic evaluation, only supporting his wish and cause. He had always expressed his desire to “live like a boy” and urged his parents to get him medical consultation.
Two procedures were performed to realign the patient’s genitals. Followed by which the boy went for a haircut, bringing his physical and symbolic transformation to completion, and ending his struggle.
