The pulmonary and critical care department at King George Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow will soon use a specialized machine to perform fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) testing. This new addition is intended to improve the early-stage diagnosis of asthma and provide more precise and convenient screening for patients who may be suffering from asthma-related ailments.
The accurate diagnosis of asthma in its early stages through the FENO machine will further allow for earlier intervention and better outcomes for patients at KGMU Lucknow.
Portable, accurate and more convenient procedure for asthma screening
FENO testing is a non-invasive diagnostic tool used to measure the levels of nitric oxide in a person’s exhaled breath. This type of testing is particularly useful in diagnosing asthma, as elevated levels of nitric oxide are often present in the breath of those with the condition.
Currently, the pulmonary department at the facility uses the spirometry method for diagnosing asthma and other respiratory disorders. However, this effort-based procedure can be relatively less accurate, as patients have to follow a strict set of guidelines to ensure accurate results.
The integration of a specialized FENO testing machine will prove to be convenient while providing accurate results in one attempt through the portability and ease of access of the equipment.
