The Gular Tree, scientifically known as Ficus Racemosa, is a common yet intriguing presence across Lucknow, especially noticeable during its fruiting season when ripe figs fall abundantly, often leaving vibrant stains on the roads below.
In Vastu Shastra, it’s advised not to plant Gular trees within homes, as they’re believed to bring negative energy. Ironically, this advice clashes with modern science, which recognises the tree’s environmental benefits, notably its capacity to produce ample oxygen.
Adding to its cultural lore, there’s a fascinating folk tale popular in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar: the tree is said to be flowerless, producing fruit directly. Finding a Gular flower is considered rare to the point of myth, with many believing no one has ever seen one.
Scientifically, though, this myth is debunked. Fig “fruits” are actually not fruits at all—they’re structures called syconia, a type of flower that conceals its reproductive parts inside.
