Chota Imambara or Imambara Hussainabad Mubarak, is one of Lucknow’s iconic historical landmarks. However, this 200-year-old structure is in urgent need of repair now. The bricks in the gate have begun to crumble, posing a risk of collapse, especially during the monsoon.
In response to a directive from the High Court, the local administration has moved forward with the renovation plans. The repairs will be carried out using traditional construction methods. Moreover, a budget of six crores has been allocated for the project.
Renovation work at Chota Imambara
Repairs will be carried out using traditional construction techniques and materials. A special blend of bell metal, jaggery and gum will be prepared to facilitate the joining process. Small bricks will be employed to reinforce the structure. Other materials, including red sand and lime, will also be incorporated into the restoration.
The main gate of the Imambara, which is currently in a deteriorated state, will be restored using time-honoured techniques. Certain sections of the main gate, which have developed holes, will be patched using bricks salvaged from the original building, ensuring the new work matches the existing masonry.
All work will adhere to the guidelines of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), with the framework for the project already finalised under the Smart City initiative.
Encroachments cleared & parking restrictions
As part of the renovation, a 1.5 km stretch surrounding the Heritage Zone will be cleared of encroachments. To maintain the area’s historical integrity, no parking will be permitted near heritage sites, including Bara Imambara, Rumi Gate, Clock Tower, Picture Gallery, and Chhota Imambara. Further, illegal shops will be removed and designated parking will be provided outside the heritage zone.
