Like many other states in the country, Uttar Pradesh may soon get its official state song. Resonating through important functions and school assemblies, the anthem would strengthen the heritage of India’s most populous territory. Chief Secretary Rajendra Kumar Tiwari informed that the state government has resolved to assign one lyrical composition as a state song and the related departments have already initiated plans in this regard.

Three years ago, the state government accorded the status of ‘UP Diwas’ to January 24 and now, the authorities are trying to give Uttar Pradesh, its new state song. While the state was known by the name of ‘United Provinces’ earlier, the attribute of Uttar Pradesh came into existence through a legislation on January 24, 1950. Notably, it took over 2 years to find a name for the territory and a range of names including Aryavarta, Avadh, Bharat Khand, Brahmadesh, Hindustan, Ram Krishna Prant and Uttara Khand were deliberated upon.
The state information department is trying to find the most suitable lyrics and the culture department is also involved in the process. It has been stated that public participation will also be roped in, for determining the best composition.

The state government is discussing the prospects of an online competition among the citizens for penning the lyrics. This will be conducted under the ongoing curtain-raiser activities of the “Bharat Ka Amrut Mahotsav”.
A culture department official said, “After the week-long activities planned under the ‘Bharat Ka Amrut Mahotsav’ between August 9 and 16 are over, we will launch a competition for people to compose a state song. We will shortlist the best entries out of which the government will pick the best lyrics and designate the same as the official state song,”
Another official mentioned that a state song cultivates a sense of pride among the people. Along with the national anthem, the song would propel patriotic sentiments amongst the citizens of the state.
