7 dosa places in Mumbai that make rainy days even better

Some foods are seasonal, while others simply feel made for the season. A hot dosa belongs firmly in the second category. As the rain settles over Mumbai and the air turns cooler, there’s something comforting about tearing into a crisp dosa while the aroma of fresh ghee, coconut chutney and steaming sambar fills the table. If you are looking for the best dosa places in Mumbai, this monsoon is the perfect excuse to start exploring. From buttery Benne dosas to crisp paper-thin classics, these 7 dosa places in Mumbai, spread across Bandra, Andheri and Juhu, are well worth adding to your rainy-day food trail.

Benne

If there is one place that has put Bengaluru-style darshini culture on Mumbai’s radar, it’s Benne. This compact eatery has become famous for its standing-only format, open kitchen and queues that begin early in the day. The dosas are inspired by the buttery Benne dosas of Davanagere. Unlike most South Indian restaurants, Benne skips the sambar and serves coconut-mint and tomato-onion chutneys.

Must try: Benne Dosa, Ghee Podi Idli
When: 7 am to 11:30 pm
Where: 16th Road, Pali Hill, Bandra West

The Tanjore Tiffin Room

Tanjore Tiffin Room proves that South Indian cuisine can be both rooted in tradition and contemporary. Inspired by the flavours of Tamil Nadu, the restaurant pairs interiors with recipes that stay close to regional cooking. Its dosas are thin, crisp and accompanied by flavourful chutneys and sambar. Unlike a classic tiffin house, the menu also explores lesser-known Tamil dishes. It’s a place where you come for a dosa and end up ordering a full South Indian feast.

Must try: Fry Prawns, Mutton Stew, Appam
When: Noon to 11:30 pm
Where: 12, Union Park, Khar West

Madras Diaries

Madras Diaries strikes a fine balance between tradition and innovation. While the menu is rooted in South Indian classics, it isn’t afraid to experiment with dishes like the famous Dosa Sandwich, without losing sight of authentic flavours. The Davangere Benne Dosa remains one of its biggest crowd-pullers, arriving beautifully crisp with an airy centre and served alongside multiple chutneys, including coconut, beetroot and tomato varieties. Add to that fragrant filter coffee and it’s easy to see why this Bandra favourite has built a loyal following.

Must try: Davangere Benne Dosa
When: 7:30 am to 11:30 pm
Where: Muzaffar Manor, 28th Road, Bandra West

UPPU – A South Indian Kitchen

UPPU brings together recipes from across South India under one roof. Rather than focusing on a single region, the kitchen celebrates flavours from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. The dosas are made using naturally fermented batter, resulting in a crisp exterior with a light, airy bite. Rich coconut chutney, tangy tomato chutney and comforting sambar round off every plate. The contemporary interiors make it ideal for a leisurely brunch.

Must try: Mysore Masala Dosa, Rasam Vada
When: 8 am to 11 pm
Where: Opposite Lilavati Hospital, Reclamation, Bandra
West

Dakshinayan

Few South Indian restaurants in western Mumbai enjoy the reputation that Dakshinayan does. Sitting opposite ISKCON in Juhu, this long-standing favourite has been serving generations of diners with consistently good food. The menu covers classics from across South India, but the dosas remain the highlight. The spacious dining room, efficient service and dependable quality have helped Dakshinayan remain one of Mumbai’s most recommended South Indian restaurants for decades.

Must try: Chettinad Maligu Masala Dosai, Rava Kesari
When: 8 am to 11 pm
Where: Opposite ISKCON Temple, Juhu

Banana Leaf

Banana Leaf has built a loyal following among Andheri locals who swear by its consistently good fare. The menu leans towards traditional recipes, with influences from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. They arrive golden and evenly crisp, with a light centre that holds its filling without turning soggy. The accompanying coconut chutney is made fresh, while the sambar strikes a comforting balance between tangy and mildly spiced. Add efficient service and wallet-friendly prices, and it’s easy to see why this neighbourhood favourite remains a dependable pick for breakfast, lunch or an evening snack.

Must try: Pacche Benne Dosa, Podi Coin Idli
When: 8 am to 11 pm
Where: Seven Bungalows, Andheri West

Cafe Mutuswami

Long before artisanal South Indian cafés became fashionable, Muttuswami Cafe had already earned a reputation for serving comforting tiffin. This pure-veg, old-school eatery continues to draw office-goers, families and loyal regulars. There are no elaborate presentations here, just consistently good food made with care. If you’re after an authentic South Indian breakfast, Muttuswami Cafe remains one of Khar’s most dependable addresses.

Must try: Paper Masala Dosa, Kanchipuram Idli
When: 7 am to 11 pm
Where: Near Khar Railway Station, Khar West
