In a bittersweet farewell to a beloved Mumbai landmark, New Yorker, the iconic Tex-Mex-Italian-Indian vegetarian restaurant at Chowpatty Seaface, has announced its closure after 45 years. Ranbir Batra, son of founder Tony Brar, shared the news on Instagram, citing unforeseen circumstances. While reasons remain unclear, speculations suggest the building may be heading for redevelopment.

New Yorker has been a staple for two generations of Mumbaikars. For many, it was the go-to spot for a casual meal with signature dishes like Mexican tomato soup, paneer quesadilla, and the famous Blue Tribe Veg Sausage pizza. It was also the place where young couples once shared Oreo thickshakes, and foodies indulged in the indulgent Mexican churros and molten choco lava cake.
As the restaurant closes its doors on September 11, there’s hope that New Yorker will live on through a new delivery model or a potential relocation. For now, it’s time to say goodbye to a spot that was part of so many memories along Chowpatty shores.
