On July 1, industrialist Ratan Tata successfully launched his dream project, with the opening of Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai. After completing its trial phase, the hospital is officially welcoming patients into Phase 1 now. First-of-its-kind in India, SAH offers round-the-clock services, helmed by pet-sensitised veterinarians and nurses.
“We are open,” announced the hospital’s social media accounts, garnering joyful reactions from celebrities and social media users. The post also details that appointments and emergency assistance can be arranged by calling +912231053105 or via WhatsApp through the hospital’s website.
Small Animal Hospital
The idea struck Ratan Tata when he flew his pet to the University of Minnesota for a joint replacement, where he witnessed the capabilities of a world-class veterinary hospital—a stark contrast to what India had to offer. Recognising India’s need for such facilities, Tata embarked on this project.
Today, the hospital stands tall, built at a cost of ₹165 crore across five stories with a capacity to accommodate 200 patients. Leading the team is Thomas Heathcote, a British veterinarian who has relocated to Mumbai specifically for this hospital.
Originally planned for Navi Mumbai when announced in 2017, the hospital’s location was shifted to a more central area due to traffic concerns. Distance could have been a significant barrier for pet parents, explained the philanthropist and industrialist.
