The Lodha Foundation has inaugurated India’s first privately funded mathematics research hub, the Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute (LMSI), in Mumbai. With a ₹20,000-crore endowment, LMSI aims to position India as a global leader in pure and applied mathematics, bringing together top mathematicians like Fields Medalist Dr. Manjul Bhargava and leading Indian scholars.
The launch event was graced by Maharashtra’s skill development minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha and LMSI’s founding director, Dr. Vijay Kumar Murthy.
India’s new era in mathematical research
Chaired by Fields Medalist Dr. Manjul Bhargava and led by renowned number theorist Dr. V. Kumar Murty, the Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute (LMSI) will host global mathematicians for groundbreaking research. Its inaugural six-month program on arithmetic statistics kicks off soon, followed by a symposium from August 17–19 and the first Indian Congress of Mathematicians in 2026.
Mathematics is the foundation of everything, from search engines to AI, stated Dr. Murty. LMSI will collaborate with top institutions like TIFR and ISI to push the boundaries of mathematical research.
Abhishek Lodha, CEO of Lodha Group, described LMSI as a “small but vital step” toward India’s development, fostering innovation and original thinking. Backed by a ₹20,000 crore endowment, the institute aims to position India as a global leader in mathematical research and contribute significantly to the nation’s growth by 2047.
