The BMC’s plan to set up a seafood plaza near Shirley Village Bus Stop at Carter Road, Khar Danda, has sparked a debate among the community. Koli women from self-help groups (SHGs) view it as a golden opportunity to showcase traditional Koli cuisine and enhance their livelihoods. However, local residents, especially chess lovers—who have long valued the area’s chess tables—are worried about the plaza’s potential disruption to this cherished space.
Opponents are concerned that adding seafood stalls could worsen traffic congestion. They also fear it could lead to more littering and disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the chess tables.
BMC to weigh community feedback
The Citizens Movement for Environment & Civic Action has formally objected to the plaza’s location, highlighting concerns about increased traffic, garbage, and potential interference with the area’s established chess community. Sanjay Nirmal, representing 86 concerned chess players, argued that the proposed site could compromise a space where local players have invested years of maintenance and community building.
Despite these concerns, BMC plans to run five temporary stalls thrice a week, prioritising Koli women for employment. While the civic body promises measures to minimise litter, residents remain skeptical. The BMC is currently reviewing public submissions before making a final decision, demonstrating a commitment to balancing diverse community needs.
