In a massive crackdown on ticketless travel across Mumbai, Western Railway (WR) has recovered ₹117.54 crore through intensive checking drives conducted between April 2024 and January 2025. The Mumbai Suburban section alone contributed ₹38.10 crore to the total collection.
2.24 lakh ticketless passengers in January
According to WR’s Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek, January 2025 proved particularly effective, with authorities detecting 2.24 lakh cases of ticketless or irregular travel, including non-booked luggage, resulting in fines totalling ₹13.08 crore. The Mumbai Suburban section saw 98,000 cases in January, yielding ₹4.13 crore in penalties.
The railway’s special focus on unauthorised travel in AC local trains has led to the penalisation of nearly 52,000 passengers during this period, collecting fines exceeding ₹1.72 crore. These ongoing drives, supervised by senior commercial officers, aim to ensure comfortable travel for legitimate passengers while deterring irregular travel practices.
Western Railway continues to appeal to the public to travel with valid tickets and proper documentation.
