Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set to partially close Terminal 1 (T1) starting Q3FY26 for a redevelopment project aimed at boosting its capacity by 33%. Once completed, T1 will be able to handle 20 million passengers annually, up from its current utilisation of 10 million passengers. The redevelopment is expected to take nearly three years.
Major carriers including IndiGo and Air India are expected to face operational adjustments during the renovation period. To minimise disruptions, Terminal 2’s capacity will be increased by 5 million passengers to help absorb the shifting traffic.
The timing of this redevelopment is significant, as the revamped Terminal 1 is set to open in 2029, aligning perfectly with the launch of Navi Mumbai International Airport’s Terminal 2. This will cater to the region’s increasing air traffic demands. In 2024, CSMIA collectively handled 54.8 million passengers.
