In a move to revamp 11 ramshackle chawls on the National Textile Corporation Ltd (NTC) land in Mumbai, a panel has been created. A high-level meeting to efficiently carry out the redevelopment of these chawls (residential buildings) was held on Sunday in the presence of NTC, state government and MHADA and MMRDA officials.
It was henceforth decided that a time-bound action plan will be implemented to renovate the chawls, spread over some 13.84 acres on 9 mill lands owned by NTC, and rehabilitate residents of the area.
What are chawls in Mumbai?
A lot of these aforementioned chawls or buildings were created decades ago to act as residences of textile workers, while some are privately owned. However, some of these old structures date back to around 100 years and are in dire need of restructuring and protection.
“About 2062 occupants of all dilapidated chawls of NTC will be rehabilitated expeditiously in close co-ordination with the Government of Maharashtra,” as per an official statement.
The NTC is a central public enterprise, under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, that was established in 1968 and currently owns 23 working textile mills producing yarn and fabric. Some 10,000 employees are deployed at these mills.
