Elon Musk’s Tesla is finally making its way to India, and its first stop is Mumbai! The EV giant has secured a prime 4,000-square-foot space at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to open its first showroom in the country.
The lease deal, reportedly finalised at ₹900 per square foot, means Tesla will be shelling out around ₹35 lakh per month—making it one of the highest commercial rents in Mumbai. The company has reportedly signed a five-year lease for the property.
Big plans, bigger challenges in the race for EV dominance
This move follows Tesla’s recent job postings in India and a high-profile meeting between Elon Musk and our Prime Minister during the latter’s US visit. The company is also reportedly planning a second showroom in Delhi’s Aerocity, signalling a strong push into India’s premium EV market.
While Tesla’s arrival has created a buzz, it isn’t without challenges. Concerns have been raised over the steep rental costs and stiff competition from Chinese EV giants like BYD and MG. Meanwhile, some people have humorously pointed out that Tesla’s self-driving mode might struggle to navigate the chaos of Indian roads.
Tesla is expected to initially import cars from its Berlin factory, targeting a price point below $25,000 (around ₹20 lakh). However, with the Tesla Model 3 likely priced at ₹35-40 lakh, the brand may face stiff competition from domestic players like Mahindra and Hyundai.
