In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, Western Railway (WR) has introduced a set of women-centric SOPs to make railway stations more gender-inclusive, according to a Hindustan Times report. These protocols will be integrated into the Amrit Bharat station scheme, enhancing stations with improved amenities designed to meet the needs of female passengers and staff alike.
As per reports, these SOPs will initially be introduced at stations along Mumbai’s Churchgate-Dahanu corridor that meet the necessary criteria.
WR’s New Women-Friendly SOPS

Well-equipped women’s toilets with sanitary pad vending machines, hangers, and female attendants.

Separate ticketing counters and baby feeding rooms with comfortable seating, nappy changing tables, and storage for baby bags.

Better lighting and CCTV coverage around areas where ladies’ coaches halt.

Identification of blind spots and installation of proper lighting, especially in entry/exit points and toilet blocks.

Prominent display of stickers with helpline numbers for reporting crimes against women.

Panic buttons in ladies’ waiting rooms linked to station master and police offices.

Methods like experience sharing and monthly feedback sessions to improve facilities for women employees.

Proper access to restroom facilities for contractual employees.

Periodic gender sensitivity training for male staff to foster a respectful work environment.
