On June 30, Sujata Saunik, an IAS officer from the 1987 batch, shattered a 64-year-old tradition in Maharashtra by becoming the state’s 1st female Chief Secretary (CS). Saunik officially assumed office on the sixth floor of the Mantralaya, succeeding Dr Nitin Kareer. Saunik’s journey of becoming the 45th Chief Secretary of Maharashtra since 1960, was not without challenges. Despite being the most senior IAS officer as of April 2023, Saunik was overlooked twice before. This year, however, the government committed to appointing her, fulfilling a long-awaited recognition of her capabilities.

Notably, Saunik, who previously served as Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the Home and General Administration Departments, was joined by at least half a dozen women IAS officers at her appointment function. This highlighted the importance of her achievement and its inspiration for women leaders.
