In order to safeguard the marginalised, Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench has put a temporary halt on the Akbar Nagar demolition drive. The stay order has been extended till February 26, thus, giving a lifeline to the residents of Akbar Nagar, on the banks of Kukrail River.
The decision has been taken to accommodate those who face genuine threat to livelihood on losing their homes. Petitioners, who are below the poverty line, can move the court before the said date. Submission of their BPL certificates or ration cards has been deemed mandatory. “In case the petitioners fail to supply the documents, as directed by this Court, this court would be forced to pass adverse orders including the orders for vacating their stay,” the court warned.
Set to hear the cases on February 26, the court made it clear that Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) can act on the homes of those ineligible and who have not filed the necessary documents.
