Lucknow woke up to a rain-soaked Monday, after heavy showers and thunder rolled through the city overnight. Drizzles lingered into the morning, with the weather department issuing an Orange Alert. More rain, possibly with thunder, is forecast through the day. The downpour brought relief from the sweltering heat, but also raised concerns of extremely heavy rain in several Uttar Pradesh districts.
According to the Meteorological Centre, a western disturbance and cyclonic circulation over North Pakistan and Punjab have shifted the monsoon trough north. This has intensified rainfall across the state. Till September 2, UP is expected to witness widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Above-normal rainfall for Uttar Pradesh
Meteorologists have forecast above-normal rainfall for Uttar Pradesh in September. In August, the state recorded 2% more rainfall than average, with western UP receiving 237.6 mm (4% above normal) and eastern UP recording 244 mm (1% above normal). District-level data shows Bijnor received the highest rainfall in August at 663.6 mm, 113% above normal, while Lakhimpur also recorded excess showers.
