As the nation readies to celebrate Independence Day, various areas are bracing for heavy rainfall, raising concerns over travel disruptions and outdoor events. In Lucknow, persistent rain and a Yellow Alert have led to the closure of all government and private schools from Classes 1 to 12 for the day. The decision comes amid widespread waterlogging and transport challenges reported across parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Heavy rains reason: Low-pressure system over Bay of Bengal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) says a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has pushed the monsoon trough southward. This has set off a trigger for heavy rain across most of Uttar Pradesh, in the next 48 hours. Lucknow remains under a Yellow Alert, with temperatures expected between 26°C and 32°C and humidity at 70–90%. Conditions may ease after August 15.

36 districts under warnings of thunderstorms & lightning

Eastern and Terai districts bore the brunt on Wednesday. Siddharth Nagar led rainfall charts at 77 mm while Maharajganj, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Bareilly, Pilibhit, and Shahjahanpur recorded moderate to heavy spells. From Thursday, the focus is set shift westward, with an Orange Alert for Saharanpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, and Bijnor. Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert is in effect for 19 districts, including the state capital.
