Mumbai’s British era Elphinstone Bridge, a crucial connector between Parel and Prabhadevi, will permanently close at midnight tonight (Friday) after multiple delays. The closure marks the beginning of the demolition process to make way for the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector.
As one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares, its shutdown is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions in the already congested area. It is home to key hospitals, offices, and schools, impacting thousands of daily commuters.
Traffic diverted, but residents’ concerns persist
While the Mumbai Traffic Police have put in place extensive traffic diversions through Tilak, Curry Road, and Chinchpokli bridges, the human cost remains a contentious issue. Following talks with residents, the MMRDA revised its original plan, reducing the number of affected buildings from 19 to just 2. As part of this, the state government has sanctioned the relocation of 83 families from Haji Noorani Chawl and Lakshmi Nivas Chawl to nearby MHADA flats.
However, the move has not quelled all concerns. Residents from the other 17 buildings fear the demolition could damage their century-old structures, while shopkeepers anticipate a loss of business. Many express frustration over a lack of written assurances, with some vowing to resist the demolition until proper agreements are finalised.
