Gujarat is rapidly establishing itself as the focal point for semiconductor manufacturing in India, surpassing other states with remarkable progress. Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, recently acknowledged the state’s ascent to becoming the epicenter of the chip industry in India.
A robust semiconductor ecosystem
The five-day exhibition held as part of Semicon India 2023 witnessed the inauguration ceremony, during which Rajeev Chandrasekhar praised Gujarat’s tremendous growth and dedicated efforts in nurturing a robust semiconductor ecosystem. He lauded the state’s potential to lead the chip industry and said, “The semiconductor and electronics sector will play a very important role in the next decade which PM Modi has called India’s decade.”
Echoing the sentiment, Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Bhupendra Patel, emphasized the critical role of semiconductors as a foundation for modern industries like electronics, telecommunications, automobiles, healthcare, and more. Gujarat has been playing a pivotal role in advancing the semiconductor sector nationwide.
During Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to the United States, an exciting announcement came from President Joe Biden, stating that the U.S. chipmaker Micron plans to establish a semiconductor assembly, testing, marking, and packaging facility in India.
A momentous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth Rs 22,500 crore was signed between the Government of Gujarat and Micron to establish this facility in Sanand. This significant partnership positions Gujarat as a supply partner to key technology companies associated with Semicon India, opening new global opportunities.
Future employment opportunities
Preparations for the future are already underway, with curriculum changes introduced in technical institutes, engineering courses, and industrial training institutes, approved by the All India Council of Technical Education. These strategic measures are expected to create a highly skilled technology workforce of 85,000 professionals in the next three to four years, fueling the industry’s growth and generating employment opportunities for the nation’s youth.
Gujarat’s journey towards semiconductor excellence not only strengthens the chip manufacturing landscape but also attracts international companies to invest, bolstering India’s standing in the global technology arena.
