As per an official statement on Saturday, the Goa-based National Institute of Oceanography has signed an MoU with New Delhi-based National Productivity Council (NPC) to jointly work in the field of climate change, environment-related data analytics, combating oil spills, and exploration of renewable energy.
NIO & NPC to work towards the assessment of macro & microplastics in marine bodies
The focus of the MoU primarily lies on the development of a long-term joint working partnership in the areas of environmental management, climate resilience in coastal zones and communities. The memorandum also encompasses topics like oceanographic data analytics, environmental impact studies and modelling to predict environmental impact, besides identifying remedial and mitigation measures and contributing to policy research.
The NIO, which operates under the aegis of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the NPC, which is an arm of the central government’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, will work towards the assessment of macro and microplastics in the country’s rivers, seas and other marine bodies.
Periodic monitoring of environmental conditions is also a part of the MoU
These two organisations will even conduct “oceanographic modelling and data analytics pertaining to environmental factors and pollutants and related impact assessments in Coastal Regulatory Zone, marine environment and forecasting”. Forging of emergency plans and carrying out risk analysis related to oil spills as well as “periodic monitoring of environmental conditions and assessment studies prescribed for projects in CRZ, ports, harbours, etc” are also a part of the MoU.
